What to Expect

Starting something new can be a bit scary, especially joining a martial arts class for the first time, so we’ve put together this guide on what to expect in your first lesson with us to help make the experience less daunting and as enjoyable as possible.

Kuk Sool is a traditional martial art, so you can expect to see and do a lot of bowing in class. In Kuk Sool we always call instructors either “Sir”, for males, or “Ma’am”, for females. We always train in our bare feet, it’s the best way and prevents any accidents from slipping in socks.

In your first lesson, we will teach you how to do our warm up, then we will cover some basic kicks and hand strikes before moving on to starting the first part of the White Belt empty hand form, Ki Cho Hyung. If time allows, we may also introduce you to some foundational self defence techniques. After the lesson, one of our instructors will talk you through the joining process.

Many of the commands and names of things in Kuk Sool are spoken in Korean, but don’t worry, we’ll translate everything until you get the hang of it.

Make sure you wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, such as a t-shirt and shorts, joggers or leggings. We also highly recommend bringing a bottle of water.
